platelets: Essential, colorless cells that control bleeding and promote clotting. Platelets can be destroyed during treatment for cancer, leukemia and other diseases.

red blood cells: Cells that carry oxygen to all the tissues in the body.

remission: The disappearance of a disease such as leukemia, usually as a result of treatment. Remission can be complete or partial.

radiation: A treatment for serious stages of leukemia using an intense form of energy to damage or destroy cancer cells.

relapse: A return of the cancer cells and other symptoms of a disease such as leukemia.

spleen: An organ in the upper left abdomen and behind the ribs. It is a part of the lymphatic system that removes and destroys old red blood cells and helps fight infection.
